Great day at the 2016 Florida qualifier today!
As the Head Referee for the day, I was able to take in all of the tournament in a way that most are not, since it was my job to "keep an eye on" everything and at some point, it got me thinking about the word objective.
Officials need to be objective - an adjective - in the sense of approaching things with a sense of fair play and non-favoritism.
The goal of the electronic scoring system in Olympic Style Sparring is in many ways an attempt to remove the subjective ("human" / "fallible") component out of the scoring ...
Without question ALL the people attending the tournament approach the day with an objective as well - using the word as a noun, to mean a goal or desired outcome.
Overall, you would be correct in saying the objective is "to have a great day of competition" - but from the perspective of the volunteer, medic, official, tournament director, coach, competitor, family member, and/or friend, the details of what that actually looks like are really going to vary!
Maybe in a following post or posts, I will delve into what those objectives have looked like at least as I have experienced them from each of those very different points of view...
But for tonight, I will just say that from my admittedly subjective, end of day, viewpoint - the objective of having a fair and well run competition and national qualifier was certainly accomplished!
It was a great day at the 2016 Florida AAU Tae Kwon Do Regional tournament!
Respectfully,
Kathy Wiz
